China is the hometown of porcelain. Chinese ceramic ware (陶瓷制品) shows a continuous development since the predynastic period, and is one of the most signifi cant forms of Chinese art. The invention of porcelain has made a great contribution to world civilization. It is called china in English because it was fi rst made in China, which fully explains that porcelain can be the symbol of China.
China is richly endowed (赋予) with the raw materials needed for making ceramics. The earliest porcelain appeared during the Shang dynasty, but the first porcelain in the real sense was not produced until the Eastern Han Dynasty.
In the Tang Dynasty, porcelain achieved its greatest technical innovations and artistic refinements (改进). Tang Sancai wares, for example, were well-known for their beautiful glaze (釉) and exquisite shape. Sancai means three colours, but the glazes used to decorate the wares were not limited to three in number. Tang Dynasty ceramics are exceedingly attractive, emphasizing China's strength, a nation full of passion.
During the Song Dynasty, many famous kilns (窑) appeared. Ding ware in the Song dynasty was the finest porcelain produced in northern China at the time. It relied more on its elegant shape than showy decoration.
Chinese porcelain shows the wisdom of the working people of ancient China. The porcelain trade has profoundly influenced the traditional culture and lifestyle of people around the world.
