Famine (饥荒) has been a major problem in China before the 1970s. Yuan regarded the needs of the country and people as his own mission. Between 1959 and 1961, when Yuan was a young teacher at an agricultural university in Hunan, China experienced severe food shortages, which prompts him to devote himself to research to help the country become self-suffi cient. After painstaking research and testing, Yuan and his team successfully developed a hybridrice strain (品种) in 1973. Yuan successfully cultivated the world’s first high-yielding (高 产的) hybrid rice strain developed from three varieties, and then continued working to develop a strain hybridized (杂交) from two varieties. “Doing scientifi c research is like high jumping,” Yuan once said. “A new height is waiting for you after you achieve one.
